Great story but Dave Garver is not a true to life DJ
Certainly the premise of being a young DJ with the very acttractive girlfriend Tobie (Donna Mills) and additionally being stalked by the equally attractive Evelyn (Jessica Walter)is many a man's fantasy. Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood, who also directs), host of a 5-hour nightly jazz show on KRML in Carmel, California fleshes out this dream. Evelyn is the obsessed fan who calls almost every night requesting "Play 'Misty' for me". Finally she waits for Dave at his favorite after-the-show bar, takes him to bed, and then starts showing up unexpectedly. Even more awkward are her frequent swings from sweet to obscene, suicidal, or homicidal personalities. Needless to say this makes it difficult for Dave to juggle his times with Tobie and even professional relationships. You get a feel for the ... I really like the romantic interlude featuring Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" as the scene moves from the seashore to a real "au natural" event with Dave and Tobie. Nostalgic props include a Princess rotary dial telephone, Scotch reel tapes, lots of vinyl, and vintage broadcast equipment. On the negative, I downgrade the film for its lack of portrayal of standard broadcast procedures. FIRST, you never see Dave cue up a record. The way it was done back in the day: 1) With turntable in neutral and motor off, switch turntable audio to the cue speaker; 2) Spin the platter by hand to the first sound; 3) Back up 1/4 turn; 4) Put shifter in proper speed slot; 5) Set fader to normal level. Then when you hit the motor switch, the record starts "on cue". SECOND, anytime the microphone is turned on, the studio speaker is muted. That's why you have to wear headphones, which the movie DJ does not. THIRD, although there are racks of cartridge tapes for jingles and commercials and 2 playback cart decks, Dave never plays any. FOURTH, in 1971, meter readings and station ID's were required every 30 minutes, which he never addresses. And FIFTH, our hero puts on a tape while he dashes to Tobie's place to save her, but it's only a 5-inch reel which would only play about 15 minutes. Hardly long enough The bonus items include a look back at this movie and how it came to be, featuring the star/director and additional actors, plus Eastwood's commentary about some of his other films. "Play Misty for Me" has plenty of tension, 2 beautiful women, and a powerful Eastwood style ending. This could even be considered a precursor to "Fatal Attraction". However, as a day in the life of a radio announcer, "Howard Stern Private Parts" is definitely more authentic. But if you're able to put the inaccuracies aside, you're sure to enjoy "Misty".

Very scary movie
"Play Misty for Me" was one of the better stalker movies of its time because it was so believable. Unlike the unbelievable plots of some films, this one unfolds quite naturally. I decided to buy the DVD because we had just come back from vacationing in the Monterey-Carmel area where the film takes place. The scenery in the film is an integral part of the story, and it is all authentic. This is a good film for all fans of Clint Eastwood to see him in an early role that is more a normal character, after his spaghetti western roles and before his "Dirty Harry" roles. It also marks his directorial debut, and show the promise of future greatness. It is also one of Donna Mills' earliest works and shows her in her early beauty. Jessica Walter plays her role with uncanny reality. The DVD ... "Play Misty for Me" was one of the better stalker movies of its time because it was so believable. One SUPERB and suspenseful Movie - one of Clint Eastwood's very best...!!
This is without a doubt one of the very best of Clint Eastwood's movies. As a teenager, I worked for the Windjammer Restaurant on Fisherman's Warf #2 in Monterey, Calif; where the "DJ Dave Garver meets Madge Brenner luncheon" scene takes place; many happy memories of living in Monterey (Pacific Grove) and flying airplanes out of the MRY airport wherein my old friend (now deceased) O.N. (Nick) Ford was the airport mgr. An excellent film - well produced, written, and directed! No complaints whatsoever!! - JY, Tacoma, WAThis is without a doubt one of the very best of Clint Eastwood's movies. This movie was frightening when I first saw it and it's still scary today! I work at a radio station and the character Jessica Walters plays is on target. This movie came along before the likes of John Hinkley, John Lennon's killer, but it rings true. Anyone who has ever worked alone on the late shift at a radio station, taking calls from listeners, knows the feeling. Strange noises and shifting shadows fill the darkened hallways beyond the studio. Lonely listeners call to talk, wanting to know about you, who you are, what hours you work, if you're single, can they come up some night to see you? Play Misty For Me is creepy and very suspenseful.
