- It’s actually made for just the iPad Mini 5, not the 4 and 5. There seem to be some issues with ones made for both fitting the 5 just right. In either case, this one fits perfectly around all ports and buttons, which tend to be the issues with such things.
- There’s a dedicated apostrophe key. Look carefully at the others on the market. Most of them have the apostrophe over the “p” or “o” — who can type like that?!
- It’s small, obviously, and the keys are closer together than on a standard keyboard, but it takes very little getting used to, especially if you don’t have Huge hands. I have large hands for a woman, and I’m just fine. It feels a little like what I imagine an old school stenography keyboard would feel like.
- Some of the keys are little “half” keys — the apostrophe and things like + - [ ] \ .... which is to say ones you don’t use every single day. Again, I’d so much rather that (and I could get used to that if I needed to use them a lot), than putting high-frequency keys like apostrophes and quotation marks on random function keys
- Speaking of which, the dedicated shortcut buttons (home, lock, app switcher, search, and even a keyboard switcher which just brings up my emoji keyboard) are excellent.
- The backlight colors are pretty :)
- The outside of the case is nice; it has a nice texture to it. Overall the case/keyboard feels sturdy and obviously heavier than the ipad alone, but somehow not significantly bulkier if that makes sense? Solid without being clunky.
- And the BIGGEST REASON: it feels like an actual keyboard. No plastickey/gummy/rickety buttons. Actual keys.
It definitely doesn't hurt that it's roughly half the price of most of the other keyboards that don't tick half the boxes listed above. Immensely pleased with the purchase all around!
The case is sturdy, and looks like it will do a good job of protecting my iPad.
It has dedicated keys for iPadOs functions, like going to the Home screen, opening the Search tool and media control keys. The keys have a nice feel to them, and the backlighting is useful when I’m working at night. The battery life seems fine — I’ve had it about a month and the battery is still around 50%
The only drawback (and it isn’t a problem for me) is that the way the iPad sits in the case makes it impossible to swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Fortunately, all the gestures that require swiping up from the bottom (Home, Dock, Active Apps) have keyboard shortcuts, so I can still perform those functions.
All this considered, the Zagg Folio appears to be the best available option out there now. It’s not perfect. The one I just replaced only lasted 6 months. However, it did a better job than some of the other options I’ve tried in the past. These snap-on keyboard cases only take so much stress on their tight hinges before they wear out. There may be others out there for a significantly higher price that would prove more durable, but I haven’t seen one that appears to meet all my needs.
Also, note that after a few attempts with keyboard cases that have a “360° rotation” option, I decided the clamshell with a 135° limitation was better. The 360 types, though cool at first, fail too quickly and cost significantly more.
The ZAGG Folio for the iPad Mini 5 is very cool. It turns the iPad mini into a mini laptop, and it’s super cute. It’s barely bigger than the iPad, and it completely protects the iPad when closed.
First off, the keys are “real” keyboard keys and not the cloth covered keys that feel more like a gel pad then a key. The keys are fairly clicky, and don’t feel too mushy, not that key quality matters for tiny keys. The fact that they’re real keys is a very nice touch, regardless.
The case is balanced properly so the iPad doesn’t tip the keyboard over during use, which is definitely a nice feature. The hinge is independent, and acts like a laptop, so you’re not limited to any set position.
The keys are backlit and can easily be adjusted, both in brightness and color.
The most useful keys that I’ve found so far are the “media” keys which are the keys closest to the iPad. The home button is probably the nicest media key, but all of the media keys are useful from time to time. Also, all of them work flawlessly with the iPad out of the box.
TL;DR: If you want to transform your iPad mini into a mini laptop, this is definitely a good solution.
